The name Barbarossa, actually Barberousse, is derived non as with emperor Friedrich Barbarossa - from a reddish beard, but been German a French Verballhornung of the Turkish honour title Baba , "father Arudsch".
Arudsch was born 1473 in Mytilene on Lesbos, as a son of a Greek gone over to the Islam. To some commands in the osmanischen and Egyptian fleet he came 1504 into the western Mediterranean, where he attacked the Christian trade as Korsar successfully in the alliance with the Hafsiden of Tunis (see: Korsaren). The Emir of Algiers asked Arudsch 1515 for assistance in the fight against the Spaniards.
Arudsch sold the Spaniards from Algeria, and murdered the Emir a little later. Arudsch fell 1518 before Tlemcen against the Spaniards. Successor in Algiers became its brother Cheir OD DIN Barbarossa (1518-1546).
