An appointment is the determination of a person for the perception of a function - mostly an office - without that a democratic choice precedes the decision-making process.

The appointment is particularly in the public service for office-holders usual. The appointment takes place then with handing a certificate of appointment out and the placing of the office oath.

An appointment as an office can be limited temporally. Usually it is at any time revocable by dismissal.

In Germany the following persons for a position are appointed:

• Employee without executive functions in an enterprise
• Members of the Upper House of Parliament
• An official, judge, state lawyers, church personnel and soldier
• President of large
• Head of the provincial government of the district governments
• Ambassador, consuls and honorary consuls (in the host country: Exequatur)
• (in the host country: Notification)
• Arbitrator in arbitral tribunals
