In the years 1904 to 1928 in the Apoldaer company Ruppe and Sohn (starting from 1912 "Apollo works AG") were manufactured automobiles of the marks "Piccolo "and "Apollo "in different versions.
These vehicles were among other things because of their relatively low selling price, which likes to good quality and many successes in international racing at that time. In the years 1904 to 1910 in the company Ruppe and Sohn air-cooled engine cars of the mark "Piccolo" were produced. For the development of these vehicles Hugo Ruppe (1879-1949) was responsible responsible.
After its separating from the enterprise and its Umfirmierung models new into a corporation was won 1910 the formed running driver and technical designer Dipl. - engineer Carl Slevogt (1876-1951) for the development. The vehicles developed by it received the name "Apollo", which starting from 1912 also the enterprise took over as company name. With water-cooled engines and the prevention of the Kutschenform with the Apollo cars a new era of autoproduction in Apolda began. Vehicles with 1-Zylinder-Motor with 624 ccm up to the 8-Zylinder-Motor with 3000 ccm were built. Nearly all parts, except for example tires, lamps and horns, were produced in the work.
In the foundry in-house the engine mounts for the Piccolos and Apollos developed. Like that the enterprise was relatively independent and one could within a short time new models develop and also with customer's requests deal. In these years the Apollo works developed to the largest metalworking enterprise in Apolda. From the many vehicle models, which were built once in Apolda, today only very few exist.
The museum Apolda acquired year of construction in the year 1995 with conveyances of the country Thuringia a Piccolo Mobbel, 1909, which can be visited up to the completion of the city museum in the hotel at the lock in Apolda.
From the automotive manufacture tradition 1994 the first Apoldaer old timer lock meeting took place, which annually lures many old timer friends from the entire Federal Republic since then on the first June weekend after Apolda.
