The name Amstrad stands for Alan Michael Sugar Trading.

The enterprise was created 1968 by Alan Michael Sugar and started as trading venture for all kinds of electrical goods. Over first sold product is delivered by Sugar a quotation: "Terrible". Admittingness attained also the secretary of "Mr. Amstrad"; Mrs. Joyce supplied the names for a wide-spread write computer system, the PCW.

In Germany and in further countries the enterprise of Sir Alan became particularly by the home computer series CPC (Color personnel computer) admits, which was driven out in Germany by the cutters computer division in

Amstrad bought up later the company Sinclair after operational difficulties and produced its last home computer models. After arising the IBM PCs and own computers on this area withdrew itself one unites from the new market created to a large extent on modular systems. Amstrads strength was based here not least on good and cheap complete systems.

Further products of the company come from the "brown" range: HIFI, entertainment electronics, household electrical connection. Highly developed E-Mailable face-to-face phones are driven out here beside TV-Satellitentechnik.

The German division of Amstrad was taken over 1999 by the Metabox AG.

  • the PDA600 - very in former times a Organizer in Newton (PDA) - style
  • the PC1512 and/or PC1640, IBM PC compatible complete systems, alternatively with 2 floppy disk drives or 1 disk and 1 non removable disk drive assembly (CP/M, DOS-compatibly, partially with other systems supplied)
  • the PC20, a small IBM-compatible in the Amiga/Atari ST TYPE housing. MSDOS and IN ACCORDANCE WITH also under the name Sinclair markets.
  • the MegaPC, a slim IBM-compatible with integrated SegaMegadrive Spielkonsole, by shifting the front screen switch-selectable. The hardware respectively of the different system was shared.

Note:

The German Amstrad CPC partner cutter produced later the cutter euro PC independently of Amstrad. A economical IBM-compatible PC in the keyboard housing with optional non removable disk. One had watched out during co-operation well.

After the assumption of Sinclair Research the Spectrum row (ZX80, ZX81, spectrum of 16/48KB, Spectrum128, Spectrum+, QuantumLeap) with the type 2 and 3 one continued.
