Amphipolis was an antique Greek Polis. It became of Athens in the year 437 v. Chr. by the field gentleman Hagnon based and an important base for Athens was in Thrakien, in order to control the Goldbergwerke in the Pangaion mountains in the future. Chr. the athenische general Kleon Brasidas attacked both generals with Amphipolis, but died in the battle of Amphipolis, even if Sparta won the battle. Shortly thereafter the Nikiasfrieden was closed.

In the year 356 v. Chr. Amphipolis of Philipp II. of Macedonia was conquered.
