Under the name Acta diurna (lat. daily reports) introduced the Roman consul Gaius Iulius Caesar a daily message bulletin, as it were the first newspaper, those from approximately 60 v. Chr. to at least 235 n. Chr. (probably not always daily) appeared.

The sheet reported on the negotiations in the public bodies and was first purely information held. It became later among emperors Augustus also the language pipe for propaganda.

The newspaper was multiplied by copying by private entrepreneurs, who added the official messages also different current information. These entrepreneurs worried also about the dispatch of the sheet into the provinces.
